Review of the 5.11 36″ Single Rifle CaseReview of the 5.11 36″ Single Rifle Case

This summer, I picked up an AR-15 and quickly realized I needed a proper rifle case for transporting it safely and securely. After some research, I decided on the 5.11 36″ Single Rifle Case (28L) in Kangaroo. I opted for this color because it stood out from the traditional black and, frankly, looked pretty sweet. At $82, the price seemed fair for a premium case with excellent features. Having already tried and loved other 5.11 products like their Braddock DP Knife, Marksman Short Sleeve Shirt, and TacTec Trainer Weight Vest, I had high expectations. After a month of regular use, this rifle case didn’t disappoint.

Design and Build Quality

The first thing that struck me about the 5.11 rifle case was its robust construction. Made from durable 600D polyester, the exterior feels rugged yet lightweight. The stitching holds up to regular use, and the YKK lockable zippers glide smoothly without snagging. I appreciated the added security of the lockable zippers, especially if you were to transport your rifle in public spaces.

The MOLLE webbing on the exterior adds a layer of versatility. I could attach extra pouches for magazines, tools, or even a small first-aid kit. I’m a fan of this modular design since it lets you customize the case to suit your needs. For further personalization, the case features Velcro patches to attach ID badges or morale patches, which I think is a nice touch.

The Kangaroo color really makes the case stand out without being overly flashy. It strikes a good balance between tactical and stylish, and it doesn’t show dirt easily, which is a bonus.

Comfort and Carrying Options

Transporting the case is a breeze thanks to its padded top handle. Even though my current setup isn’t particularly heavy, the padding would definitely come in handy for longer carries or when the case is loaded with additional gear. The case also includes a removable shoulder strap, which is a thoughtful addition for those who prefer hands-free carrying. However, I found the strap more of a nuisance than a benefit during regular use.

One thing I noticed about the 5.11 Single Rifle Case is the positioning of the shoulder strap attachment points, which are on opposite halves of the case. When you open the case, the strap stretches across the center, which can make it a bit tricky to fully access the interior. Whether I was securing the rifle or retrieving it, the strap sometimes got in the way, requiring me to shift it aside or unclip it briefly.

That said, this design does have its advantages. When the strap is fully adjusted, it helps balance the case well while it’s on your shoulder, making it more comfortable to carry. So while it may momentarily interfere with accessing the contents, it does serve its purpose for carrying the case.

The strap clips themselves feature a built-in spring mechanism that automatically closes the clip, making it easy to secure or release the strap quickly. The clips also pivot, which allows some flexibility in how the strap sits while you’re carrying it.

It’s not a major issue, just something I noticed. The strap is easy to remove thanks to these sturdy, well-designed clips, and I found it more convenient to leave it off most of the time. If you’re someone who frequently uses the shoulder strap, it’s worth considering these quirks.

Interior Features

Inside, the case is thoughtfully designed with padded sleeves for the muzzle and butt stock. These keep the rifle secure and prevent unnecessary movement during transport. There are also two removable retention straps that adjust to fit your specific firearm. However, threading the Velcro straps through the loops can be a bit tricky—the Velcro catches on the loops, which slowed me down at first. This is a minor gripe, but worth noting.

The angled cutouts at each end are a neat feature. They’re perfect for tucking the rifle’s muzzle and stock into place, and they could even hold small accessories like ammo boxes or spare magazines in a pinch.

Testing the Case

I’ve taken the case on multiple trips to the range and into the woods. Most recently, I used it to transport my AR-15 while sighting in my new .243 deer rifle. The case handled the task like a champ. It kept my rifle secure and well-protected, even when jostling around in the back of my Jeep.

I also liked that the 36″ length provides a bit of extra space for longer accessories or adjustments to my firearm setup.

Conclusion

The 5.11 36″ Single Rifle Case (28L) checks all the right boxes for a premium rifle case. It’s durable, versatile, and thoughtfully designed. While the shoulder strap was slightly inconvenient, the overall functionality of the case more than made up for it. At $82, the price feels justified for what you’re getting—excellent protection, room for customization, and a sleek look.

If black isn’t your style, I highly recommend the Kangaroo color, which adds a unique touch. Whether you’re heading to the range or out into the field, this case is a reliable companion. Based on this experience and my history with 5.11, I’ll definitely keep exploring their gear lineup. To learn more or pick one up for yourself, visit 511tactical.com.
